Christmas
Traditions
There are many Christmas traditions that are
upheld by millions of people each year. These are the things
that are anticipated eagerly by children and adults all over
the world. In fact, you will start to see Christmas decorations
in department stores as early as September.
Decorating and trimming Christmas trees are one of the most
popular events of the Christmas season. This time honored
tradition has been performed for centuries. Initially, years
ago, people made their own decorations from many household and
natural items. Red berries, stringed popcorn, pine cones, and
many other things were used to adorn the trees that were cut
down and brought into the house.
One of the most eagerly awaited Christmas
traditions is the giving and receiving of gifts. There are very
few people who don’t get excited about this part of the holiday
season. Shopping lists are made, the shopping is done, gifts
are wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree. A part of this
tradition is the guessing and shaking of the wrapped presents
to try to figure out what’s inside.
Excited children go to bed each Christmas
Eve so that Santa Claus can come to bring presents to their
houses. Of course, this is one of those Christmas traditions
that even adults enjoy, especially on Christmas morning. Those
little faces alight with happiness over their new gifts from
Santa bring joy to everyone.
Most families share the tradition of getting
together for a big holiday dinner. The decision seems to still
be out on whether this is something ALL families should do, but
it is still a practice followed by many, for good or bad. The
day preceding Christmas Day is spent cooking and baking.
Following the delicious meal, gifts are usually exchanged and
opened.
Another of the Christmas traditions is attending either a
church or school Christmas play. Proud parents and grandparents
love taking pictures or video taping these performances so they
can brag later. These fun filled events nearly always include a
choral singing of Christmas songs that have been painstakingly
practiced for weeks on end.
Attending various Christmas services at church is something
else that many people do during the holidays, even if they
never participate in church any other time of year. These
church services hold an appeal that touches the spiritual
forces that surround this very special time of year. It brings
a sense of hope and peace.
Whichever of the Christmas traditions you
take part in regularly, there is always the opportunity to
start your very own tradition. Many families have them. These
special traditions were begun years ago by relatives and have
been passed down. There is nothing that is more meaningful than
this during the holiday season.
