Christmas
Catalog
Many older
people remember when they were young children, and how much
they looked forward to getting the Christmas catalog in the
mail. Companies such as Sears, J. C. Penney, and a few other
large department stores mailed out their special holiday
catalogs a month or two before the Christmas
holidays.
Children
always loved it when these arrived. They would spend hours and
hours combing the pages of the toy section in these catalogs.
Many would mark the pages in some way containing a coveted
present.
This does not happen so much these days with the introduction
to computers, the internet, and online ordering. However, some
larger toy stores will still send out a Christmas catalog
through the mail. These catalogs delight children of all ages
when they arrive at their houses. You may notice many dog eared
copies of these holiday catalogs at the homes of friends and
family during the weeks before Christmas. Just like their
parents or grandparents, they will also mark pages containing
presents that they would like to see under the tree on
Christmas morning bearing their names.
While these books were widely perused, there were also other
uses for a Christmas catalog. Following Christmas, many of
these were turned into the prime items in certain crafts. They
were turned into such things as doorstops, or used to cut
pictures from for a collage picture. It seemed that these books
became quite handy for many things that had nothing to do with
finding and ordering gifts. Many people will still actively try
to find catalogs in order to use them for crafting.
It is almost a bit disheartening that many companies depend on
the internet or small flyers now, rather than sending out a
Christmas catalog. This is truly one of the favorites from the
past that is missed by many who experienced the excitement of
receiving these catalogs. There are some mail order companies
that will issue holiday catalogs, but these seem to only be
available to businesses, rather than private citizens. That is
perfectly understandable from a business view point, but it is
still rather sad that you can’t get these catalogs at home.
It does seem as if the true Christmas catalog has been replaced
by small holiday flyers from conglomerates such as Walmart and
Target. While these are fun to look at, it just isn’t the same
as having a huge 500 page book loaded with items to choose
presents from. You can whip through these flyers in a matter of
minutes, while it would take many pleasure filled hours to pore
over the catalogs of the past. Maybe this can become a thing of
the future again if enough people start requesting
them.
